We tried something a little different this time around. We went to the studio on Friday night, set up all the gear, got all the tones, then spent the night, so we could wake up fresh in the morning and get right to work. That way, our ears weren't all burned out from the hours of soundchecking and whatnot. We recorded things a bit differently as well, especially in the bass dept. We had an old Fender Bassman amp in the basement of the studio that we mic'd and mixed it with Johns direct bass sound. THe result was a thicker warmer sound that hadn't achieved on previous recordings. We spent the whole Saturday recording music and the following Sunday doing vocals. We finished everything except "Jerry's Just Ahead", which I did later that week. We all came home with bronchitis and were basically sick for weeks, but it was worth it. We decided to steer clear of heavy sampling this time around, and relied on old tapes of us in the van, and weird nature noises from Trouts grandmas backyard. This was the first recording where we were able to do EVERYTHING right at Mud Hut besides mastering, but oddly enough, we ended up doing that there too. We sent the final mix to a mastering facility in NYC and it came back sounding like icicles sliding across a tin roof (ie: not good) We took matters into our own hands and did the whole thing ourselves. The results were much more satisfying.
