When the writing for "The Schematic" first began, it was just David and myself because John had let it be known that wouldn't be able to play any longer due to work and travel issues outside of everyone's control. We didn't know what we were going to do, but we had all 3 discussed who we were going to get to take up the bass spot.. The last thing John wanted was for us to break up on account of his leaving. We had 2 people in mind, and luckily Rick was one of them! I gave him a list of 10 songs to learn so we wouldn't have to miss any shows and the rest is history. The first practice was like magic, it wasn't even like an "audition", it was a real "rehearsal". In the meantime, David and I wrote 4 tunes in the course of an evening due to label interests popping up. We recorded what would become "Dummy It Up" and "Body of Binky" in one night at Mud Hut. Once Rick was firmly in place, we began writing songs with him with amazing results. Rick comes from a guitar-playing background, and his bass ideas were no different. Very guitar-oriented and true to the technical aspect of Coinmonster. We wrote quick and thorough, and "The Schematic" is what we have to show for it. "The Schematic" was a two session recording, one day doing "Dummy It Up", "Workshop", "Kid Across the Street", and "Sara Smile". I did the vocals a few days later, then we holed up at Mud Hut for a weekend to finish what we had written in the meantime. We spent a little more time on this one than the others (that only meaning 3 days instead of 2). If you ask Bill at Mud Hut who the fastest recording band on the globe is, he'll tell you it's us, and he's right.
